Artists use series to explore topics in a variety of ways. Some artists use series to explore different aspects of a single topic, while others use series to explore different topics altogether. Series can be used to show the development of an artist’s style over time, to explore different perspectives on a topic, or to create a sense of unity and cohesion within a body of work.

Michael Kerry Brown tends to explore a concept across his work, life String Theory.  Sally Pennington Moore does a similar variation of series to explore ideas like Geoscience and the Circle of Life.
Patrick Kerry Brown tends to explore a process in his series, as he works on different techniques and skills to accomplish a goal.

Series Based on Processes

These beak forms are reminiscent of a curved bird’s beak.  It is a delight to watch the color application which is different for each one and to see the beak being pulled and curved.

Cane is a color application where a thin rod of glass is made from various glass rods of different colors to form a design.  Cane ranges from simple to complex.  A simple cane is basically a cylinder of colored glass coated with clear glass.  There is also a cased cane where the clear is coated with color.  Then with complex cane, there are multiple designs, really only limited by the creator’s skill and imagination. Flat Cane is another cane-making process where a color cup is made and stuffed and the cane is then flattened and pulled.

Cross-Over Series is when the color setup is done in either the hot or warm glass studio and the final form is created in the other studio.

Incalmo is a glass process that involves constructing an object, usually a vessel, by fusing in-situ two or more glass blown elements.  This process was first practiced in the Islamic world during the Middle Ages.  It demands great precision as the edges of the two elements must be precisely the same in diameter.

Murrini or murrine are slices of simple to complex cane that are made to be used in cross-section as part of the color application for a piece.  There are infinite designs from simple to complex and forms including round, square, triangular, and rectangular.

Raked Series are formed by threading a color or rolling up cane and then manipulated while hot at the bench using a tool to drag across the lines.  The designs you form can be as simple or as complex as you make them.

Hot Assemblage Series is when the entire work is made of parts that are joined together while they are hot.  So it is the incalmo process on steroids.

Series Based on Ideas

Boundary Series is formed by creating pattern bars, placing them in a design and allowing them to spread.  It started off with Metamorphosis, displaying chaos boundaries, and grew from there.

The Cenote Series for Michael Kerry Brown is an exploration of openings or pits in glass.

Circle of Life Series developed from conceptualizing the cut off spear bases as cirques.  Then as Sally was unable to work in the hot shop during her chemo she started using more blown glass parts for circles and developed various kiln formed pieces in this series.

Fabric Series is an exploration in weaving glass using various techniques.

Fenceline Series represents what we commonly see here in Texas.  The fences are made with white cane and white threading against a background color.

Folded Space series is all about manipulating glass in space to have it fold into the desired forms.

Geoscience Series incorporates forms created using Sally’s 35 years as a geoscientist really affects her work in glass.  She has multiple series that show this effects including the Lava Series, Stratigraphy Series, and Geoscapes.

Linear Equation Series

The Mosaic Series is an exploration in blown/warm glass to explore mosaics

The Pick-Up Stick Series Installations were inspired by the childhood game that we use to play on my Granny Pennington’s porch.

Primal Series is an exploration of things as they might have appeared at the dawn of existance.

Smoke Trail Series are representative of a single strand of smoke in a quiet room or the mist as it lifts from the valley.

String Theory Series is all about Michael’s interpretation of the theoretical framework in physics in which particles are replaced by 1D objects called strings.  And it is all about how these strings propagate and interact through space with each other. Or put another way it is a unified theory to explain the fundamentals of the universe.

Upcycled Series  is all about repurposing or recycling glass into other forms.  This includes taking bottles and stretching them, shards of other pieces to form new ones.

The inspiration for the wall drawing series came from the shadows as we were pulling cane in the studio and the use of line drawings in our work.   Contact us about installation and shipping.
